This is for people
who've been trying.

Someone with $10,000 deserves the same care and guidance as someone with $10,000,000. We built Your Pocket Planner to make that possible.

To all the Stephens and Graces out there:
we built this for you.

Stephen and Grace's story:

"You know, what makes this so frustrating is that we did what we thought we were supposed to do. We worked hard, saved what we could. We had an advisor and trusted her, because that's what we were told was the 'right thing to do'.

We paid her a lot of money over the years.

We figured things were being taken care of so we didn't think about it much. Years went by, life was busy and we were distracted but we figured we were okay. We figured if we weren't that someone would tell us. That we'd be alright and when the time came, we could retire and finally enjoy life a bit. We really looked forward to that.

It wasn't until later that something started to feel off. When we finally sat down and looked at everything, it hit us: we're not as okay as we thought. We really weren't okay at all.

And now what? We're trying to get through every day. I'm still working, I thought I'd be done by now. Stephen was retired but he had to go back to work. And we're worried about our kids. They're struggling with their own stuff and we'd really wanted to help them and we just can't. Instead, now we're just worried we'll be a burden to them.

This isn't how we pictured things. These are supposed to be our golden years. It really hurts that we're stuck here, even though we were supposed to be alright. But all our time is gone and now there's nothing we can do except grit our teeth and bear it."

These are real people. We've paraphrased, but this is a true story and one we've seen happen over and over.

Stephen and Grace were failed by the system that was supposed to help them.

But you know what didn't fail? The fees they paid to their "advisor".

We don't like that. It's not fair. It's not right. It needs to be better. We built Your Pocket Planner to make it better.

Niel MacIntyre
Niel
Co-Founder & Chief Planning Officer
Niel has spent more than a decade in finance, and most of it taught him the same thing: the people who need good advice the most are usually the ones who aren't getting it. He started at TD Asset Management in Toronto, working on fixed income and private investments, then moved into advisory work at a large full-service brokerage in Halifax. Sitting across the table from real families, it became clear the system really wasn't helping them that much. That's what he set out to change with YPP. Niel built the planning methodology behind every Financial Game Plan. He's a CFA charterholder and a Certified Financial Planner (CFP), but mostly he just wants to make this stuff make sense for regular people.
Jason Barnett
Jason
Co-Founder & Chief Technology Officer
Jason has spent over a decade building the behind-the-scenes technology that keeps software safe for millions of people, most recently as a security engineer at Apollo GraphQL, and before that at CircleCI. He's the person who makes sure your information is handled with care and kept locked down. But what really drives him is building things that make people's lives easier. At YPP, he took a genuinely complex planning engine and turned it into something that just works, so you can focus on your plan and never think about what's happening under the hood.

A few things we think are true
about financial advice in Canada.

1
Good advice shouldn't be a privilege.
The current system rewards people who already have a lot. We built this for everyone else.
2
People aren't confused because they can't understand. They're confused because it isn't explained clearly.
When someone sees their plan in plain language, they get it. People in the industry can often make finances more confusing than they have to be, so you feel like you should keep paying them.
3
Knowing what to do next is much more important than knowing everything.
We haven't met anyone who doesn't want to be better off financially; the trick is getting there. Two problems though: first, there's no clear next step, and second, people don't know how to take that step. That's what we fix.
4
Financial security changes how people live.
Less stress. More breathing room. The ability to take care of the people you love. This is about much more than money. And we take that VERY seriously.

You should know how we make money.

Your Pocket Planner makes money through the subscription fees you pay us. That's it.

No referral fees. No fund companies. No data sales. Nothing hidden. Your subscription is our only revenue.

To us, it really matters that our incentives are aligned with your best interests. We win when you find genuine value, not when we steer you toward a product. When we say your fees are too high, we're not risking a relationship. We're just telling you what we see.

What we are. What we're not.

Your Pocket Planner helps you build a plan for your finances. We're not a licensed advisor, portfolio manager, lawyers or accountants. Our guidance is educational and does not constitute financial advice as defined under Canadian law.

For complex situations (significant business income, estate planning, large portfolios), consider working with a fee-only CFP or registered advisors alongside this tool.

Your Pocket Planner and qualified advisors can and should coexist. Think about us as the foundation, not the ceiling. Work with a qualified advisor when your situation calls for it.
