To all the Sarahs and Georges out there:
we built this for you.

Sarah and George's story:

"You know, what makes this so frustrating is that we did what we thought we were supposed to do. We worked hard, saved what we could. We had an advisor and trusted her, because that's what we were told was the 'right move'.

We paid her a lot of money over the years.

We figured things were being taken care of so we didn't think about it much. Years just went by, life was busy and we were distracted but we figured we were on track. We figured if we weren't that someone would tell us. That we'd be okay and when the time came, we could retire and finally enjoy life a bit. We really looked forward to that.

It wasn't until later that something started to feel off. When we finally sat down and looked at everything, it hit us: we're not as okay as we thought. We really weren't okay at all.

And now what? We're trying to catch up. I'm still working, I thought I'd be done by now. Sarah had retired but had to go back to work. And we're worried about our kids. They're struggling with their own stuff and we'd really wanted to help them and we just can't. Instead, now we're just worried we'll be a burden on them.

This isn't how we pictured things. These are supposed to be our golden years. It really hurts that we're stuck here, even though we were supposed to be alright. But all our time is gone and there's nothing we can do except grit our teeth and bear it."

These are real people. We've paraphrased, but this is a true story. And we've seen this exact story play out over and over again.

Sarah and George were failed by the system that was supposed to help them.

But you know what didn't fail? The fees they paid to their "advisor".

We don't like that. It's not fair. It's not right. It needs to be better. We built Your Pocket Planner to make it better.

Niel MacIntyre
Niel
Co-Founder & Chief Planning Officer
With over a decade of experience across institutional finance and private wealth planning, Niel has seen how financial advice actually works, and where it falls short. After six years at TD Asset Management in Toronto focused on fixed income research and private investments, he moved into advisory work at Edward Jones in Halifax. Five years in the advisory business made one thing clear: most people aren't getting the quality of guidance they deserve, and the system isn't built to fix that. Your Pocket Planner is his attempt to change that. Niel designed the planning methodology and analytical framework that underlies every plan. Niel holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation and is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP).

Jason has spent over a decade building the infrastructure that keeps software companies running securely at scale. As a Staff Security Engineer at Apollo GraphQL and formerly at CircleCI, he specializes in cloud architecture, DevOps, and security engineering, with a focus on building systems that are both robust and airtight. He knows how to handle sensitive data responsibly and has spent his career making sure the right safeguards are in place. But beyond the technical side, Jason is genuinely motivated by tools that make a real difference in people's lives. At Your Pocket Planner, he designed and built the technical foundation that turns a complex planning engine into something anyone can use, without ever having to worry about what's happening under the hood.

A few things we think are true
about financial advice in Canada.

1
Someone with $10,000 deserves the same guidance as someone with $10,000,000.
The current system rewards people who already have a lot. We built for everyone else. High-quality advice shouldn't be a privilege.
2
People aren't confused because they can't understand. They're confused because it hasn't been explained clearly.
When someone sees their plan in plain English, they get it. Many advisors often make finances more confusing than they have to be, so you feel like you should keep paying them.
3
Knowing what to do next matters more than knowing everything.
People don't stall because they're lazy. They stall because nobody gave them a clear next step. That's what we fix.
4
Financial security changes how people live.
Less stress. More breathing room. The ability to take care of the people you love. This is about more than money. We take that seriously.

You should know how we make money.

Your Pocket Planner makes money through subscriptions. That's it.

No referral fees. No fund companies. No data sales. Your subscription is our only revenue. Aligned incentives matter.

We win when you find genuine value, not when we steer you toward a product. When we say your fees are too high, we're not risking a relationship. We're just telling you what we see.

What we are. What we're not.

Your Pocket Planner helps you build a plan for your finances. We're not a licensed advisor, portfolio manager, or planning firm. Our guidance is educational and doesn't constitute personalized financial advice under Canadian law.

For complex situations (significant business income, estate planning, large portfolios), work with a fee-only CFP alongside this tool.

Your Pocket Planner and qualified advisors should coexist. We're the foundation, not the ceiling. Work with a qualified advisor when your situation calls for it.
